In fact, 63% of the SARS cases in Hanoi, 51% of the cases in Toronto, and 46% of the cases in Hong Kong were reported to be healthcare workers. Why? What lessons were learned? * It was determined that several factors contributed to the high incidence of healthcare workers developing SARS. These factors included an: Insufficient supply of masks - especially N-95 respirators; Poor fit – often as a result of wearing over beards, mustaches and other facial hair that prevented a good fit; Inadequate fit testing of respirators inadequate knowledge of proper facemask and respirator use; High aerosol exposure during respiratory care procedures; Inadequate eye protection; and Poor technique when removing personal protective equipment that resulted in self contamination and contamination of the environment * Even if you do not “see” the contamination, pathogens may be alive on the surface of the PPE and awaiting transport to people and objects in the environment.
