You have been asked to investigate the possibility of cutting the financial costs of operating your department. ●Which are the areas where costs could be cut? ●What problems might arise from cutting costs? Cost Cutting There are several methods business leaders or managers use to reduce costs that can be damaging to the health of the organization. These include downsizing, reducing customer service, and cutting corners in production methods. Cost Cutting Effective ways to reduce production costs include: Training your workers Getting quality goods from suppliers Using TQM tools Cost Cutting Reducing overheads Advertising Research and development Leasing new equipment rather than buying it outright Renegotiating your contracts with suppliers Cost Cutting UNIT 1a Work Roles Speaking: Describing work roles Sales PR Account Customer Service Accounts Personnel / Human Resources RD Production Dispatch Purchasing What is WorkSet How does the Workset system use colour to clarify work roles? Workset allows companies to clarify work roles by classifying different aspects of the job according to colour. Companies can use colour to specify the exact level of responsibility to be given to a number of key tasks. These specifications can be changed as the job changes. Employees can use the same system to give feedback on the job from their point of view, ensuring that job descriptions remain relevant. How does the manager’s brief compare with what the employee actually does? According to the manager’s brief, about half of the employee’s time should be spent taking personal responsibility for meeting objectives (yellow work).
