When the train speed achieves a configurable value under this MSS, the traction of the train is removed. If the train speed achieves the MSS, the Emergency Brake is applied. ATO will regulates the speed of the train achieving much less variability in inter-station run times than the drivers. Using coasting, an ATO can achieve significant energy savings. In an inter-station and when the circumstances demand it, an ATO has to accurately stop the train in front of a signal and re-start it, manually or automatically, when the condition changes.
