Chapter 1 Basic Requirements for Writing
Types of English Essays
A narration is an account of an event or a series of events.
Description is to paint a picture in words of a person, place, object, or scene.
Exposition means explaining or supply knowledge or ideas.
Argumentation is to convince other people to agree to and approve the writer’s point of view, even persuade them to change their mind or behavior by offering logical proofs in a reasonable way.

The Hazards of Moviegoing
I am a movie fanatic. However, I hate to watch movies in the theatre. The problems in getting to the theater, the terrible conditions of the theater itself, and the disturbing behavior of some moviegoers are all reasons why I don’t want to go there.
(First of all, just getting to the theater presents difficulties. It takes about a thirty-minute drive to the theater down the crowed streets. And then there are the long lines waiting for you to buy a ticket for a popular movie.) (Once entered, you are confronted with the problems of the theater itself. The musty smell is everywhere in the theater and you can never hope to take a fresh air. Also half the seats you sit in seem loose or tilted so that you sit in an awkward position. ) (What’s worse, some of the moviegoers are disturbing during the film. Little kids race up and down the aisles, usually in giggling packs; teenagers whistle and shout at the screen; adults comment loudly on the performance of the stars.)
With all these problems, I was tired of the experience of getting to the movies and dealing with the theater itself and some of the other moviegoers. Therefore, I dislike the idea of going to watch the movie in the theatre.
