Article 9 Campus Drinking
College students embarking on a summer of fun may be in for a sobering experience when they return to campus in the fall.
Student imbibing is coming under increasing scrutiny – and discipline. Alarmed by growing alcohol abuse and rowdy behavior, college administrators, students, and companies that sell alcoholic beverages are promoting the theme of “drinking responsibly.”
The past spring showed that, while making no attempt to prohibit drinking, many schools are keeping tabs on how much alcohol is available at campus functions and cracking down, if necessary, when students go too far.
For its part, the Distilled Spirits Council of America sent posters, pamphlets and other materials on responsible drinking to more than 100 colleges during the past year. In addition, the group has sponsored television spots – featuring professional football players – that encourage young people to learn more about the proper uses of alcohol.
Typical of such efforts on campus is Texas A M University’s “Let’s Party” booklet, with a formula to determine how much beer, wine and liquor should be purchased for parties. “We are trying to promote responsible use of alcohol rather than turning our backs on it as we did for so many years,” says Jan Winniford, assistant director of student affairs.
Fraternities, sororities and other campus groups at the University of Maryland now have to get an O.K. from the school and county government to buy liquor for parties. Yale has barred alcoholic beverages at university functions for freshmen.
The University of Connecticut bans keg parties in dormitory rooms and confines them to designated campus locations. Student must be able to prove they are old enough to drink. The University of Wisconsin is urging fraternities and sororities to hold “dry rushes” when recruiting members.
