A survey shows that 22.2% of 2007 college graduates who found jobs in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou left these cities within three years of graduating, the corresponding rates for undergraduate college graduates being 17.1% and 27.3% for vocational college graduates. Of 2007 male undergraduate college graduates who found jobs in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, 20% – 7.2 percentage points higher than female graduates – left these cities within three years of graduating. Of male vocational college graduates that found work in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou the same year, 29.9%, compared with 21.4% female graduates, left within three years. These figures show that more male than female graduates left their jobs in the three cities, which implies that men, as future breadwinners, encountered more difficulties in these major cities in efforts to earn reasonable salaries.?It is noteworthy that 6% of 2007 undergraduate college graduates who left these main cities within three years started their own businesses, as compared to the 2.6% who stayed and the 4.9% of 2008 college graduates that did so. Among vocational college graduates who left Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou within three years of graduating, 12.8% started their own businesses compared to the 6.8% who stayed. These survey results hence suggest greater entrepreneurial opportunities in cities outside Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou Developed Cities Most Desirable At 67.3% for undergraduate college graduates and 67.1% for vocational college graduates, the talent attraction index of eastern and coastal areas is more than double that of the 32.3% who are drawn to central and western areas.
