Teaching design for The Adventures of Tom Sawyer The analysis of the teaching material The material I’m dealing with is a reading piece. The title is The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The passage is an introduction of the book, which tells readers the story of Tom Sawyer, the characters appeared in the story, the wonderful scene and the theme of the book. At last, the teacher leads students to get the spirit of the story from the book. The passage is not short. There are more than twenty new words in all. So the teacher is supposed to pay attention to some of vocabulary, and lead students to guess the meanings of most words. Skimming skill, scanning skill and the key elements of a book review are also the main focus of the lesson. The analysis of students Students of Grade Eight are active and lively. The story of Tom Sawyer is so interesting that it can interest not only young kids but also adults. What’s more, students will know more about adventures and adventure stories during the teacher’s presentation. Therefore, the lesson is estimated to be able to arouse students’ learning emotion. As for knowledge skills, students of Grade Eight have mastered a number of words and vocabulary learning skills. So the teacher estimates that they are able to understand the vocabulary teaching strategies easily in class. But in the last step, it will be difficult. Teaching objectives 1. Language knowledge aims: Students can understand and use productive words: adventure, treasure, island, gold, cave, pirate, hero, freedom theme, character, scene and so on. Students can get a general idea of receptive words: behavior, punish, , dead, funeral, outsider, Mississippi River, hide, appear and so on. Students can have a general idea of sentence structure: find oneself in, run away, get lost, grow up and so on. 2. Language skill aims: Students can learn about some strategies: prediction, skimming, scanning, and so on. Students can master and use the strategy “guessing the meaning of
