There are several mail functions that can be attributed to nonverbal communication across cultures.the functions of nonverbal communication could be identified in the following five aspects. Repeating 重复 People use nonverbal communication to repeat, clarify, and emphasize their point of views. Eg. A supervisor welcoming a subordinate back after a lengthy illness might give him a warm handshake to stress how pleased he is at the others return. Complementing 补充 Nonverbal communication cues can add to or complement a verbal message. Substituting 替代 Nonverbal messages may substitute verbal ones in certain settings. Eg. There are situations in which words cannot be used. In a very noisy street, for example, police officer might use hand gestures to replace spoken messages. Regulating 规范 Nonverbal behaviors can help control verbal interactions by regulating them, such as turn-taking signals (hand raised) in conversations Contradicting 反驳 Certain nonverbal behaviors can contradict spoken words. Accenting 强调 Nonverbal signals that accent call our attention to a matter under discussion Eg. A person pounding on a desk as she makes an important point. I hate my job. I am so bored. Elements of Nonverbal Communication Body Language: Appearance Posture and Walk Gestures and Touch Eye contact and Facial expressions: Vocal cues: Pitch, rate, volume, quality, articulation Spatial Use and Time Appearance Appearance (clothes, hairstyle, makeup, personal decoration) may indicate mood, occupation, culture, status, or group membership, character. Posture Posture refers to your body’s position as you sit or stand, which communicates a great deal about your mood or feelings. Posture Walk What can you guess if you see people 1, walk slowly and drag their feet 2,walk hurriedly Gesture Gestures are movements of hands and arms to help make a point.
