* Aim of the study was to establish the nutritional adequacy of a whey hydrolysate formula compared with a whey-predominant milk based formula. Rainer, diese Studie ist im clinical evidence booklet, aber nicht in der Shanghai Pr?sentation. Soll sie hier rein? Ja * * 45 healthy newborn infants were included in this double-blind, prospective randomised study. Infants with a family history of atopic disease were excluded. One group was exclusively fed Danone Allergy Care and the other group was exclusively fed a standard whey-predominant infant milk ad libitum for 13 weeks. Weight and length gain and mean volume of formula ingested were evaluated. At 13 weeks, blood was collected from all infants for analysis of several parameters indicating the nutritional status of the infants. Glossary: Double-blind is a clinical trial design in which neither the participating individuals nor the study staff know which participants are receiving the experimental treatment and which are receiving a placebo (or another therapy). Double-blind trials are thought to produce objective results since the expectations of the doctor and the participant about the experimental drug do not affect the outcome. Prospective is a clinical trial in which participants are identified and then followed forward in time. Randomization is a method based on chance by which study participants are assigned to a treatment group. Randomization minimizes the differences among groups by equally distributing people with particular characteristics among all the trial groups. Moreover, randomization minimizes bias since the researchers do not influence which individual will be allocated to which treatment group. Ad libitum feeding is feeding infants on demand: The infants are fed in response to their own hunger cues in contrast to feeding set volumes of milk at pre-defined intervals. * * 41 infants completed the study, 21 in the Danone Allergy Care group and 20 in the whey-predominant milk group.
