Website: (30 Jul 2007) Nippon Oil to build HS-FCC demonstration plant Nippon Oil has finalized plans to build a high-severity fluid catalytic cracking (HS-FCC) demo unit with a capacity to process 3000 bbl/y of oil. Work on the basic design of the plant will commence this fiscal year started 1 Apr 2007. Construction is slated for fiscal 2008 and the plant is due to complete in fiscal 2010. The project will probably be located at the company’s refinery in Mizushima, Japan. The HS-FCC process uses a downflow reactor for heavy-oil feedstock and powdered catalyst. The oil and catalyst have a uniform reaction at a temperature of 600°C and reaction time of 0.5 seconds. It produces high added-value for fractions such as 25% for propylene, 19.5% for butane and 29% for gasoline. A commercial scale project with 30,000 bbl/day capacity is already being planned. The company aims to raise its propylene capacity to 800,000 tonne/y this fiscal year and 1 M tonne/y in fiscal 2010. Japan Chemical Week, 12 Jul 2007, 48 (2424), 5 UOP and ENI plan to make diesel fuel from vegetable oil Honeywell company UOP LLC and Eni SpA revealed that Eni will install a manufacturing plant in Livorno, Italy, that can process 6500 bbl/day of vegetable oils into ‘green’ diesel fuel via the Ecofining technology.
