Over the next 200 years, colonial society became distinctly American, not European. Society centered on the church, local politics, the business economy, and the family. Colonists lived in relatively small communities. The task of building new towns and cities, creating institutions, cultivating land, and starting new businesses required the involvement of most of the community. General social condition of colonies and their relationship with Motherland As the enslaved population continued to grow, Africans developed a society of their own. They held on African cultures while coping with harsh conditions in a strange land. Most colonists, of whatever home culture, could agree on one thing: they did not want be interfered by Europe. Religious freedom had been built into the constitutions of all the colonies except Plymouth and Massachusetts. The English government on the whole left the colonies alone to govern themselves. English attempts to control colonies would result in strong assertion of colonial rights. Three Types of British Colonies The proprietary colonies (业主殖民地) were the lands granted by the king to his faithful followers, who were the real owners of these colonies. Pennsylvania, Maryland, the Carolinas and Georgia are such colonies The royal colonies (皇家殖民地) were the lands under the direct control of British king, who appointed governors to represent him in the colony.
