INT/DAY. MILA’S ROOM – MILA’S INTRODUCTION In her room, Mila leans against a wall, against a tape measure. She stands on tiptoes to extend to a maximum height and marks her head level on the ruler. MILA (strenuous noise) Mmmglmglmm… Oh, oh, waaah!… We realise she has fallen off a toy. SFX: Boom! MILA Ouch, ouch, ouch! MILA (exclaims, vexed) Did you see that!? Even if I cheat, I’m still too small! I can’t match Maxime, the awfuhorrible school bully. He’s always putting chewing gum in my pony tails and making fun of me… Grrrr! (she thinks a moment ) … He reminds me of that huge guard who wouldn’t stop annoying Anatole the gardener! Dont you know this story? (pauses for response) Ok then, I’ll tell you! Let’s go! Hehehehe! Mila draws open two sliding panels, like shutters. We enter into the tale. SC. 2. EXT/DAY. ANATOLE’S SNOW - COVERED GARDEN The title “The Cherries in Winter” is on the screen. Mila reads it, off-screen. MILA (VO) The Winter Cherries ANATOLE (humming merrily) la, la, la, la, la… In a snow-covered garden Anatole, a small, young gardener inspects a row of fruit trees decorated with little ribbons on the branches, a scarf around the trunks, caps, etc…) pushing a wheeled cart containing pretty, different-coloured flasks marked according to different fruits, a stethoscope and hairstyling implements (scissors, comb…) MILA (VO) That’s Anatole. He’s always pampering his trees Anatole stops in front of a pear tree bearing beautiful pears. He takes the scissors and comb from his cart. He passes like a tornado, working on the tree. A cloud of smoke engulfs the tree he is pruning. When finished, the tree is cut in a pear shape. ANATOLE L
