Victorian poets 1 Alfred Tennyson 2 Robert Browning 1. Brief introduction of Alfred Tennyson Alfred Tennyson was a famous British poet in Victoria Period. He was very interested in poems and began writing poems at seven. He published many poems in his lifetime, most of which are masterpieces, such as, The Miller’s Daught, the May Queen, The Eagle. 2. Brief introduction of the poem It is a lyric poetry in memory of Arthur H.Hallam who was not only the best friend of Tennyson but also an excellent appreciative reader of his poetry. Hallam influenced Tennyson greatly. In 1833 Hallam suddenly died. His death made Tennyson very sad and was a very hard blow for Tennyson. After his friend died, Tennyson missed him for many years. Hallam’s figure appeared in his mind again and again. Tennyson cherished the memory of his friend deeply. So in the poem The Eagle, he created a brave eagle flying everywhere. He compared his friend Hallam to the eagle. Because he and his friend indulged in self-admiration ,he described the eagle flying freely and lonely in order to extol the outstanding personality and indomitable spirit of his friend.
