REFL ECTIONS ON SYLLABUS FOR ENGL ISH TEACHING
OF NON2ENGL ISH MAJOR GRAD UATES IN CHINA

Abstract
This paper first reviews the background with the f ormulation of the first national syllabus for graduategeneral picture about the progress in this English teaching in China , and presents a field since the

implementation of this syllabus. At the same time , some special features of the syllabus are manifested and
some serious problems are discussed. On the basis of the research and analysis , the present syllabus f or nonEnglish maor graduates is out of date and cannot meet the learnersneeds and the needs of society today.
Theref ore , it is necessary to revise it as soon as possible.

1. Introduction
English teaching f or non2English major graduates is a significant part of todayps graduate education in
China. Since t he beginning of t he nineteen2eighty , a graduate program has developed at a rapid rate , and
t he number of graduates has greatly increased. According to the statistics issued in 2004 , t he total
enrollment of graduates including Ph. D candidates increased f rom 10 ,900 in 1978 to about 300 ,100 in
2004. As all t he graduates at universities are required to take one year or half a year English course as
compulsory , the program has drawn a great concern f rom the English teachers in t his circle.
As the graduate degree system was restored in late 1978 in China , there was no nation2wide syllabus
f or graduate English teaching bef ore 1992. But the rapid growth since 1978 called f or a unified syllabus in
t he field. Then in 1990 , a conference was organized in Xipan , Shanxi province , at which a decision was
made t hat a draft of t he syllabus f or graduate English teaching would be worked out under t he direct
leadership of the Education Commission (now E
