Conducting an Opinion Poll Outline of the Project Groups of 4 or 5 students Purpose: - to design a questionnaire on a particular topic, - interview classmates to gather their opinions, - summarize the results, - give a presentation of the results, - write a report of survey results. First Week Brainstorming topics Each group chooses a topic Design questionnaire: - choose aim of your poll - must design 6 questions on topic Homework: - each student must come to next class with their questions sheets completed with their 6 chosen questions same for each group member Second Week Conducting the opinion poll: - Groups with 4 members must interview 5 classmates - Groups with 5 members must interview 4 classmates Must interview students not in your group Answers to poll questions must be recorded on the interview sheets provided Homework: Summarize results, prepare a summary report and a presentation for the next week Third Week Each group must give a 5 to 6 minute presentation to the class regarding the findings of their opinion poll. After each presentation there will be a 4 minute question period. Upon completion of the presentation, each group will hand-in for marking: - the questionnaire packages provided - the summary report complete with a cover page. Questionnaire Design Elements of Questionnaire Design Design can be split into 3 elements: 1. Determine the questions to be asked 2. Select question type and wording 3. Design question sequence and overall layout Give a brief explanation of the purpose of your survey Determine Questions to be Asked Step 1: What is the aim of your opinion poll - What are you trying to discover about the public’s opinion on this topic - What things could affect or influence your survey results: - past experiences - gender - background, class status, etc?
