It turns fuel into the energy of auto-powers.According to the different types of fuel used, the engine can be classified as being either a gasoline engines（spark-ignition engines）or diesel fuel engines. They are both combustion engines. The most common automotive engine is the gasoline engine.Spark-ignition engines: these are running preferably on petrol and with external or even internal mixture formation. Combustion is initiated by externally supplied ignition spark plug.The spark-ignition engine is an internal-combustion engine which converts chemical energy into thermal energy by burning fuel and then converts the thermal energy into mechanical energy via a piston.Diesel engines: these have internal mixture formation and are running on diesel fuel. Combustion in the cylinder is initiated by auto-ignition. Like the spark-ignition engine, the diesel engine is also an internal-combustion engine.
