2009-11-10 The Dative Case The Dative Case The dative case signals the indirect object that receives the effects of the verb action indirectly. In English, the indirect object is indicated either by its placement in the sentence (first) or by following the word “to”. Review the nominative and accusative cases. Compare the dative to the nominative and accusative cases. The dative case is also used with certain specific verbs. These dative verbs are usually marked (dat.) in the dictionaries next to the verb entry. Dative verbs are generally verbs of advantage or disadvantage.
