Chapter VI Religion in Britain I. General Introduction of the three main world religions 1. Buddhism It was founded in the 6th century B.C. by Sakyamuni. Its doctrine is found in Buddhist Scripture. 2. Islam It was founded in the 7th century by Mohammed. The doctrine of Islam is found in “Quran”. 3. Christianity It came into being in A.D. 30 and its doctrine is the Holy Bible. II. British Worship 1. The Anglican Church A. It came into being during the European Reformation of 16th century. B. It is the most important denomination and it is the established church of the English nation. C. It is also called the Church of England. It is one of the main denomination of Protestantism. D. Archbishop of Canterbury called the Primate of all England, is its spiritual leader and Archbishop of York is called the Primate of England. E. Bishops and dioceses and cathedrals F. It runs its own affairs, owns stocks, shares, land and other properties. G. It is now all-inclusive, having the ability to be both Protestant and Catholic. “ high church” and “low church” 2. The Free Churches A. Forming Many protestants objected that the Anglican church had not moved far enough away from the Church of Roman.
