* * * * This visualization example is based on a real-world consulting experience. The Vice President of Sales for a manufacturing company has two objectives. First, she wants to determine which customers have the highest profitability potential. For the purpose of her analysis, two criteria determine this: high sales and long lead times. Longer lead times allow her company to optimize the production schedule, which lowers manufacturing costs. Her second objective is to meet promised ship dates. This is paramount for her company because many of her customers require just-in-time (JIT) shipments, and late shipments may shut them down. ? The VP historically has obtained this information from the “Customer Report”, shown in the next slide. * The VP bases most of her analysis on “The Customer Report,” the Holy Grail of the company. The important pieces of information, according to the VP, are the ‘Order Date’ and the ‘Ack Date’. ? The ‘Order Date’ is the date the customer placed the order. The ‘Ack Date’ is the date by which the customer needs the goods to be shipped. ? Looking at the report, you can see that calculating the lead time is fairly simple, as is calculating on-time delivery. However, how do you compare the lead times of all your customers at once? There may be a hundred or more pages to this report! What about your average delivery performance over time? What about average sales over time? Which customers are most profitable? Which way are these things ‘trending’? ? These questions are not easy to answer with just a report like this in front of you. Instead, the data must be examined using tools that allow you to quickly visualize trends and important values. * * From this chart, you can see that you can track the sales for a customer over time. This does not show each individual order, but instead shows the totals for each quarter for the last two years.
