An Analysis of a Framed Glass Window under the Wind Pressure Using ANSYS Abstract: The deflections of a framed glass window under the wind pressure are analyzed in this paper. Two different kinds of models are established to analysis this problem: the solid model and the solid-shell model. Besides, different meshing methods –free meshing and mapped meshing- are used in different models. In addition, contact pairs are created to analysis the influence of the displacement of the solid model using simplified planar model. Both of the wooden frame and the glass are supposed to be isotropic in our models. To save the calculating time, 1/4 models are used in our simulation. By comparing the result of the two different models, we found that the solid model with contact pairs using mapped meshing method satisfies the real situation most. The wood frame and the glass plate will be separated at the upper surface of the glass plate owing to the elastic modulus of glass is much bigger than that of wood. The maximum z-displacement of the window locates on the centroid of the glass plate. There is a stress concentration near the contact line between the glass and the wood. Key words: ANSYS; framed glass window; z-displacement; wind load; contact pairs Introduction 1.1 description of the problem In our former work, we analyzed structure consist of single material. The window frame under the wind load is a common model describing the usual problem that two different materials are combined under the loads. Now consider the following, simplified model of a window. A quadratic glass plate is clamped within a wooden frame with quadratic cross section. The aim of the analysis is to compute the maximum transverse displacement of the window pane subject to wind pressure under consideration of the flexibility of the frame.
