Deafblind is painful I especially remember the tenderness with which my mother tried to soothe me in my waking hours of fret and pain, and the agony and bewilderment with which I awoke after a tossing half sleep, and turned my eyes, so dry and hot, to the wall, away from the once-loved light, which came to me dim and yet more dim each day. I struggled—not that struggling helped matters, but the spirit of resistance was strong with me; I generally broke down in tears and physical exhaustion. I felt absolutely alone, cut off from my friends and the firm earth. The immense, the unknown, enfolded me. Three days to see On the first day, I should want to see the people whose kindness and gentleness and companionship have made my life worth living. I do not know what it is to see into the heart of a friend through that window of the soul, the eye. I can only see through my finger tips the outline of a face. I can detect laughter, sorrow, and many other obvious emotions. I should call to me all my dear friends and look long into their faces, imprinting upon my mind the outward evidences of the beauty that is within them.
