APPLICATION OF KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT MODELS IN MANAGING AND INTEGRATING INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE WITH EXOGENOUS KNOWLEDGE FOR AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT IN TANZANIA Edda Tandi Lwoga PhD candidate, University of KwaZulu Natal, 207521242@ukzn.ac.za, Librarian, Sokoine National Agricultural Library, Sokoine University of Agriculture, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, tlwoga@suanet.ac.tz Over the years, farmers predominantly in developing countries have planned agricultural production, and attained food security by using their indigenous knowledge (IK). Despite its potential for agricultural development, IK is rapidly disappearing due to many factors. Formal information and knowledge management model in developing countries is based on managing knowledge, which is largely produced by universities and research institutions. Little room is left for the management of agricultural IK and its integration into the rural knowledge systems. The management and integration of IK to the rural knowledge systems may enhance agriculture productivity and ensure food security which is important aspect that the world is striving to attain. One of the approaches that may enable the management of farmers’ knowledge is the application of knowledge management (KM) models. The advancements of information and communication technologies (ICTs) can also enhance the management of IK through KM approaches. This proposal seeks to establish the extent to which KM models and ICTs may be used to manage agricultural IK, and to appropriately introduce the needed agricultural exogenous knowledge in the rural areas of Tanzania. This proposal presents the background information, problems statement, research objectives, siginificance, originality, theoretical framework and research methodology. Keywords: indigenous knowledge, knowledge management, information and communication technologies 1. Introduction and background information In an economy where the only certainty is uncertainty, the one sure sour
