These letters represent the beginning of the interview process thus care should be taken when formulating one. Employers will consider cover letters as part of the vetting(审查) process when streamlining the applicant pool. The purpose of cover letters is to provide a summary of an applicants background in relation to an advertised job position. First of all, a cover letter should indicate knowledge of the position being applied to. In many cases, applicants will use the same letter when applying to multiple jobs. Employers will look at this form letter and conclude that the applicant is not really interested in their company. Applicants should provide a general summary of why they should be considered for an interview by stating qualifications and experience related to the job. This need not be long as a few lines can usually suffice. It is important to note that proper structure, correct grammar and spelling are also taken into consideration. It shows the employer that you are serious about the interview process by taking the time and care to formulate the cover letter in a professional manner. This can be the difference between winning the interview or going into the discarded pile. The basic structure is as follows.1. Address the proper hiring manager in the organization. If possible, try to be specific in naming the individual. If this isnt possible, a Dear Sir or Dear Madame is a perfectly respectful salutation to use. 2. State briefly why your experience would be a good match to the job. You need not write a summary but a few sentences to show your interests and understanding of the job requirements and duties. 3.
