Unit 5 What were you doing when the rainstorm came?

New lesson:
Step 1 Lead-in
Lead in by showing a video of a person walking in the rainstorm helplessly. And talk about this situation with students.
Can you guess what’s the feeling of the person? Have you ever had the same experience? Can you share the experience with us? What were you doing when the rainstorm came?
Step 2 Presentation
Look at the sentence in the picture:”What were people doing yesterday at time of the rainstorm?” Read it aloud over and over, and try to recite it.Then think over what the difference is between “What were you doing?” and “What are you doing?”
Have some students try to say out their ideas.
Then point out that they both mean “doing”, but “were” represents a past time, while “are” represents now.
Step 3 Listening
1). Listen to the TV reporter and circle the correct responses in 1a.
2). Check the students’ answers.
3). Listen and repeat.
Step 4 Practice
Talk about what the people were doing at the time of the rainstorm.
A: What was the girl doing at the time of the rainstorm?
B: She was...
Step 5 Listening
1). Listen and number the picture in 2a.
2). Listen again. Fill in the blanks in the sentences for each picture in 2a.
3). Check the students’ answers.
Step 6 Pair work
1). Listen to the tape again and repeat it.
2). Role-play the conversation between the boy and a TV reporter.
Step 7 Role-playing
1). Go over the conversation in 2d, and deal with the difficulties in groups.
