You write next Brief writing practice Procedure: each student has a sheet of paper, at the top of which he or she writes a sentence: it can be a simple sentence of fact or opinion, or a question. For example: What are you going to do after the class? Or It’s very cold today. Or I hate people smoking near me. This is then passed to neighbour, who adds an answer, comment or further question ( again, in the form of a full sentence) and passes it on to someone else. And so on. The paper is not folded, so that all previous contributions are visible to each writer. After about five contributions, students are invited to read out the results, these are often amusing! The activity can, of course, be done in pairs rather than by individuals. Words beginning with… Vocabulary, spelling. Procedure: give a letter, and ask the student to write down as many words as they can that begin with it in two minutes. They can do this individually, or in pairs or small groups. Then they tell you what their words are, and you write them up on the board. Encourage students to ask for explanations of words that any of them did not know. Note: it is a good idea at the writing—up stage to have an aim: can we all together get 20, or 30, 0r 40 words? Variation: ask students to think of words that end with a certain letter, or- much easier, for elementary class- that simply include it. Words out of--- Vocabulary, spelling. Procedure: write up a selection pf about ten disconnected letters scattered on the board, and ask students to use them to make words. Each letter may be used only once in each word. Make sure there are two or three vowels among them! For example: A S B W G E I Y R N J D Students might suggest words like: grain, beg, angry, yes, begin. They can suggest the words directly to you to be written up immediately, or spend two or three minutes thinking of suggestions (individually, or in pairs
