Ezra Loomis Pound Background   Ezra Weston Loomis Pound (30October 1885– 1 November 1972) was an expatriate American poet and critic who was a major figure of the early modernist movement.   Pound was born in a small, two-story house in Hailey, Idaho Territory. Ezras grandfather, Thaddeus Coleman Pound (1832–1914), was a retired Republican Congressman for northwest Wisconsin. (威斯康辛州) Ezra Pound with his mother in 1898, wearing his Cheltenham Military Academy Uniform. Education In 1892, he studied in Miss Elliotts school in Jenkintown.(珍金镇) In 1893, he studied in the Heathcock familys Chelten Hills School in Wyncote. (温科特) In 1894, he attended to the Florence Ridpath school in Wyncote. After the academy he may have attended Cheltenham Township High School for one year, and in 1901, aged 15, he was admitted to the University of Pennsylvanias College of Liberal Arts. In 1903, he attended to Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. In 1905, after graduating with a Ph B, he studied Romance languages. In the spring of 1906, he return to the University of Pennsylvania, (宾夕法尼亚州)where he obtained an MA in the spring of 1906. Achievement His contribution to poetry began with his development of Imagism, a movement derived from classical Chinese and Japanese poetry, stressing clarity, precision and economy of language. His best-known works include Ripostes (1912), Hugh Selwyn Mauberley(1920)《休·西尔文·毛伯利》and the unfinished 120-section epic, The Cantos(1917–69)(《诗章》). Style Imagism (意象主义)and Vorticism(漩涡主义)   Pound reacted against decorative flourishes found in Edwardian writing, saying poetry required a precise and economic use of language and that the poet should always use the exact word, stripping the writing down to the barest essence.(不加修饰的本质) Translations Pounds translations represent a substantial part of his work.
