ENG7330: GRADUATE RESEARCH SEMINAR Sample Literature Review A combination of postmodern science fiction and cyberpunk, Don DeLillo?sCosmopolis(2004) and William Gibson?s Pattern Recognition (2003), mark attempts to cognitively map the relations of fluid capital and to make these complex global systems more intelligible to the reader. Through their central protagonists, DeLillo and Gibson portray the effect that late capitalism has on perceptions of the global city and its postmodern geography. At times, these novelists give the impression of speaking through their characters, which allows them to frame their own skeptical worldview and present their fictional worlds in response to a range of critical texts. This strategy allows them to explore how digital, consumer and corporate culture functions within the global economy, and to present ways in which theseinterconnecting processeslead to confusion and, at times, dislocation in the protagonists themselves. This dislocationcan be traced tothe conditions of cybernetic society (namelyitsproliferation of forms of instantaneous communication and high-speed economic transactions), which has forced human beings to adapt toan accelerated temporality and created the impression of the present and future merging together. At various points, the novels recall the idea of “future shock”, a term used by Alvin Toffler to describe “the shattering stress and disorientation that we induce in individuals by subjecting them to too much change in too short a time” (2).
