Social Crime Prevention and Youth Crime in UK BSc (Hons) Criminology Criminal Justice Name: Guo Binghui Introduction Social crime prevention has been a major strategy of national crime prevention in Europe. These governments have provided funds for social crime prevention, which seek to prevent offending by changing social environment (Knepper, 2007). Currently, criminologists focus more researches on how prevents crime by reducing opportunities for crimes but not by shifting social policy. In other words, social crime prevention which is based on researching social policy has not been a prevailing approach to tackle criminal issues. However, social policies such as education policy, housing policy, employing policy and health policy have affected endlessly development of crime. One of aims of social crime prevention adjusts these policies as it is one of the root causes of crime. The essay is concerned with exploring how social crime prevention interferes to offending behaviour and reduces crime. The essay is divided into three sections. The first section concerns with stating the control theory. By this theory, we can more clearly understand the relationship between crime and prevention. Secondly, the root causes of crime are concerned. As we only understand the root we can explore some effective approaches of prevention. Finally, there is a more specific statement which is concerned with relationship between youth crime and risk-focused prevention. Control Theory and Social prevention Social crime prevention focuses on tackling the fundamentality causes of crime more than the opportunity of crime. It is concerned with reducing crime in form of social control. Therefore, control theory is an effective approach, which explains why most of people commit crime.
