Abstract Chinese word “tian” (天) is a frequently used word and has different meanings in the different contexts. Besides the meaning “sky, day”, it also has many other meanings. And the exact meaning is related to the concrete context. Therefore, when translating we must choose appropriate English words. This paper first discusses different meanings of Chinese word “tian”, and then the basic methods for translation of Chinese word “tian” into English are introduced and discussed, that is: transliteration, literal translation and free translation. It is of practical significance to do cross-cultural communication and translating practice.
