This chart tells the tale. It begins when we began keeping records, near the beginning of this century, and it goes to the present. A couple of things to point out: 1. Note the jump up in about 1914 - as a gunpowder manufacturer, DuPont was rapidly increasing production in this period because of WW I. Then, as now, rapid increases in production create challenges in safety. The improvement trend quickly resumed, as you can see. 2. Note the much smaller reversal in the WW II time frame. We apparently learned something. 3. Note that the curve is a classic “learning curve”, in that there is a steep improvement portion followed by a shallowing trend. Since about 1955, DuPont has been in the flat, asymptotic part of the learning curve where it is very difficult to achieve significant year-over-year improvement. Nonetheless, we have not accepted the implicit message that we are “safe enough” or that the “point of diminishing returns” has been reached. To the contrary, we have sharpened our tools and gone after the incremental improvements in our systems to reach our ultimate goal - zero incidents. 4. The beginning of OFF THE JOB curve indicates when DuPont began tracking that metric. Publicly available record keeping in the US industry base of even ON THE JOB statistics began later. The numbers speak for themselves in terms of DuPont performance relative to other companies. * * We have strong evidence that organizations embracing safety as a value, with high-level management involvement, see sustainable change and remarkable improvements.
