D. , first goes through undergraduate school with a premedical training program, typically in the science . The program lasts three to four years and generally culminates in a bachelor of arts or bachelor of science degree . This is followed by (usually) four years of medical school ---- two spent in comprehensive science courses and two in clinical work covering the full spectrum of the medical field . After medical school , the new doctor spends one or two years as an intern , practicing under the supervision of other doctors ; then come one or more years of residency training if the doctor intends to specialize in a particular field rather than to become a general practitioner .
