Accordingly there are two important documents in a chemical facilities to help you understand the hazards, i.e. MSDS and PID drawings. When you first time to work on a new process plant, I think the minimum documents that you shall have are the MSDS and PIDs. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) provide pertinent information to employees about hazardous materials and chemicals in the workplace. MSDSs are important sources of chemical information in areas such as: Manufacturer information Chemical synonyms Physical and/or Chemical Health Hazards Spill Response Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) “Every facility must have an MSDS for each hazardous material used, manufactured, or present in the workplace, except for small quantities of consumer products. MSDSs must also be maintained for incoming sealed containers of hazardous chemicals.” “MSDSs must be readily accessible to all employees around-the-clock and to contract workers who work with, or who are exposed to, hazardous chemicals.
