In 1871 Henry L. Sitler built the first structure on the future site of Dodge City. In June of 1872 Dodge City was founded 5 miles west of Fort Dodge. George M. Hoover had the first business—a whiskey bar built out of sod and boards. It quickly became a trade center for travelers and buffalo hunters. By August of 1872 businessmen, leaders, military men from Forts Riley, Dodge, and Leavenworth, and the town company started town development. It was first named Buffalo City but they changed the name because another city had the name. By September of 1872 new railroads going through Dodge initiated tremendous growth. Now there were 2 grocery stores, a saloon, general merchandise stores, dance hall, restaurant, barber shop, and blacksmith shop.
