A Brief study of Netspeak and Culture 　　Abstract: Occuring as a language variety, Netsspeak has distinctive lingusitice features in grammar and graphology. Its popularity on the Internet has formed a global speech community, which consequentially leads to the conflict between cultural globalization and cultural identity. 　　Keywords: Netspeak, culture 　　【中图分类号】G122 　　The rapid development of the Internet has brought a new world that is convenient, and colorful to the current globe. A great number of people communicate frequently in this virtual world with a new form of language, which is defined as Netspeak in this paper. As a new language variety, it has provided a new field for research in linguistics and sociolinguistics. 　　I. What is Netspeak? 　　Occurring as a completely new form of language accompanying the emergence of the Internet, Netspeak is quite different from the language we use in our daily context. It is looked as a variety of our language. Hudson defines variety of language as a set of linguistic items with similar social distribution. Specifically, It will be noticed that it is consistent with the definition to treat all the languages of some multilingual speaker, or community, as a single variety, since all the linguistic items concerned have a similar social distribution - they are used by the same speaker or community. That is, a variety may be much larger than a lay language, including a number of different languages. (Hudson, 1980:23-25) For Netspeak, it refers to the very unique language used on the Internet. Internet users are continually searching for expressions to describe their experiences, to capture the character of the electronic world, and to overcome the communicative limitations of its technology. They coin new terms and introduce variations in lexicon and grammar into established ones by combining Roman letters, Arabic numerals, characters and punctuation marks available. 　　II.
