Unit 2 Sporting events Experts suggest people play sports more.Sport is not only physically challenging, but it can also be mentally challenging.Criticism from coaches, parents, and other teammates, as well as pressure to win can create a great deal of anxiety or stress for young athletes.Research has shown that stress can lead to burnout.Burnout has been described as quitting of an activity that was at one time enjoyable. The early years of development are critical years for learning about oneself. The sport setting is one where valuable experiences can take place.Young athletes can, for example, learn how to cooperate with others, make friends, and gain other social skills.Coaches and parents should be aware that their feedback to youngsters can greatly affect their children.Youngsters may take their parents’ and coaches’ criticisms to heart and find a flaw in themselves. Coaches and parents should also be cautious that young sport participation does not become work for children. The result of the game should not be more important than the process of learning the sport and other life lessons. In today’s young sport setting, young athletes may be worrying more about who will win instead of enjoying themselves and the sport.Positive support should be provided regardless of the result.Research shows that positive support has a greater effect on learning than criticism.Again, criticism can create high levels of stress, which can lead to burnout. 1.criticism n.批评 2.feedback n.反馈 3.flaw n.缺陷,瑕疵 Read the passage carefully and judge the following sentences true(T) or false(F). 1.Sports are only physically challenging.( F ) 2.Coaches’ and parents’ criticism has little effect on young children.( F ) 3.Criticism can create high pressure on young sport participants and lead to burnout.( T ) Period One Welcome to the unit Reading Ⅰ.单词自测 1.committee n.委员会 2.delighted adj.愉快的,高兴的 delight vt. vi.(使)高兴;n.高兴 delightful adj.令人愉快的 3.significance n.重要性,意义 significant adj.有意义的;重要
