American Literature Revision Literature of Puritan New England (P5-8) In the case of New England, the word “Puritanism” has been used to sum up the literature of the time. The early American literature was heavily weighted in subject and style by religious consideration. Its value as literature is less high. It is amazingly rich, but not highly imaginative. Origin of Puritanism Martin Luther John Calvin Puritan Doctrines Total depravity: Through Adam and Eve’s fall, every person is born sinful. (concept of Original Sin) Predestination ( or unconditional selection): God has predestined all events and “saves” only those he wishes to save. Only a limited few are selected for salvation. Limited atonement: Jesus died for the chosen only, not for everyone. Irresistible grace : Grace is defined as the saving and transfiguring power of God. God’s grace is freely given, which cannot be earned or denied. Important Essayists of Puritan New England (1) John Cotton (1584-1652) The Way of Life: He suggested the virtues of the Puritans– industry, dependence, faithfulness, humidity, cheerfulness, modesty and resignation. (2) Roger Williams (1603-1683) The Bloody Tenet: He attacked the “soul killing” requirement of religious conformity, which he opposed with his doctrine of “liberty for cause of conscience”. (3) Cotton Mather (1663-1728) An unceasing writer, Mather became a symbol of the Puritan decline. (4) Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) - He was a powerful preacher and an important figure during the Great Awakening.
