Collecting Data By Du Xingying 2016. 4. 20 Think-aloud Diary Think-aloud有声思维 Nature: as a technique of data-collection Origin: 1980 cogitive research gained favor Representatives Main focus Questions Cohen,1987 Goodman,1989 Guo 1997; Lu, 1997 Guo Wen, 1989 Flower et al.,1990 Hosenfeld,1984 Hudelson,1989 Lauer Asher,1988 Zamel, 1983,1987 Raimes, 1985 They probe into the process of students L2 writing and reading by this technique. (1) What is think-aloud? (2) How to carry it out? (3) Limitations (1) What is think-aloud? Think-aloud is a technique to get inner thoughts in the subjects mind while s/he is performing a language activity. It requires subjects to speak out their inner thoughts. Think-aloud for children is a natural behavior. However, for L2 learners, this technique is unnatural and needs proper training, or it cannot work effectively. Think-aloud example:Guos study P345 RQ: use a think-aloud procedure to investigate to what extent L1 is involved in students picture composition. Subjects: 20 senior 2 and senior 3 students (Extrovert and talktive) Training:two weeks training on think-aloud. two tasks: ①read some classical Chinese prose pieces and show their understanding by thinking aloud ②describe a process by which they understood a distorted or blurred picture or words. purpose: make subjects fully know how to use this technique in later L2 writing (Chinese not mixed with English ) Think-aloud example:Guos study Test:subjects are asked to write a story in English of about 100 words based on a series of pictures while trying to say aloud anything occuring in their minds. Requirements: ?a tape-recorder(transcripts/protocols) ?inner thoughts in Chinese or English (natural) ?long time silence is forbidden. Results: (1)statistical comparison between the quantitative use of L1 and L2; (2) qualitative analysis of L1 function; (3) hyposis of two L2 writing models with a focus on L1 use. How is think-al
