I. Teaching aims:
1. Learn to use modal verbs.
2. Talk about the ways to express requests and thanks

Summarize the rules of modal verbs

Learn about the special use of modal verbs.

Review method to help the students remember what they have

VI. Teaching procedures
Step1. Lead in
Show some pictures to the students on the screen. Then ask them : can
you play football well? Can you sing pop songs? Can you see the pictures on
the screen clearly?
Ss: Yes, I can. /No, I can’t.
在这一过程中,启发学生理解can表示ability的用法,同时引出情态动词的教学。
Step2. Pair work
1.??? Ask the students what modal verbs they have learned.
2. Get the students to find out the sentences with modal verbs from the
reading passage.
3. Let the students work in pairs to translate these sentences, trying to
give an exact explanation of the modal verbs according to the situation.
Step3. Grammar
T: Now let’s look at these sentences again to see the functions of the modal verbs.
Ss discuss by themselves.
The answers are as follows:
1).Most ancient festivals would celebrate the end of cold weather, planting in spring and harvest in autumn. (表示“倾向”过去常常)
2).Some festivals are held to honor the dead, or satisfy and please the
ancestors, who might return either to help or to do harm.(表示“可能性”)
3).Festivals can be held as an honor to famous people or the gods.(可能性)
