Introduction Mathesius, the founder of the Prague School, thinks most sentences can be delimited by two parts: one is theme, the other is rheme. Theme usually lies in the front of the sentence, and tells us something about the subject in communication, while rheme narrates and explains the subject. So theme stands for known information and rheme is new ones. And Halliday also agrees with his theory, and holds that the theme includes many contents, including the subject and other parts of the sentence. Based on the theory, he brings up the concepts about “simple theme” “multiple theme” and “clause theme”. 2. Thematic Progression Danes sums up three basic thematic progressions by careful research--- simple development type, continuity development type and derivative development type.
