Development in the new century involves building a harmonious society. Faced with this new concept, some people still maintain that the urgent task is to develop economy on a large scale. They hold that many people are living in poverty and can’t afford the basic schooling for their children. And they also believe we can strike a balance between the developed east and the developing west by further developing our economy. On the other hand, there are many people who insist that environmental protection is of first importance. They claim that we have only one mother earth.
