An adventure in Africa Reading I Teaching aims:1. Get more common sense about travelling 2. Read a letter about an adventure in Africa 3. Identify the features of an informal letter Teaching important and difficult points: how to read an informal letter. Teaching Procedures: Step 1 Lead-in 1. Show Students some pictures about beautiful scenery, and start a talk about “traveling”. Task1: Let Ss try to think as much as possible about reasons for traveling. 2. In response to T1, Ss give out their own answers. 3. Summarize the Ss’ answers, providing them with some possible answers, such as, to enjoy beautiful scenery; to enlarge our views and broaden our mind; to learn cultures and customs; to learn about history; for an unusual or exciting experience… 4. Lead the talk to a discussion concerning T2: What should we do before traveling? (Pair work) 5. In response to T2, Ss give out their own answers. 6. Summarize the Ss’ answers, providing them with some possible answers, such as, to tell the people around you when and where you’re going and ask someone to look after your house and things; find the route and the information about the places; bring a credit card with enough money; avoid too much baggage; always bring some medicine; don’t forget to bring your camera; prepare items for traveling… 7. Sum up what is an adventure. Step 2 Presentation 1. Ask Ss to skim the passage to have a general idea about the whole passage and then answer the following questions: Q1.Who wrote the following letter? ; Q2. What animal is uncomfortable to sit on? ; Q3. How long will the author stay in Africa? 2. Show Ss the reading strategy: how to read an informal letter. 3. Help Ss analyze the passage for detailed reading. 1) Ask Ss to read the first paragraph together. Q1. Where will Toby go? ; Q2. What will Toby and Colin do before Colin goes to university? ; Q3.
