翻译英语2班 茹美环 3112011036 语用学课程论文 Importance of pragmatics in translation With the improvement of the translation theory, Pragmatic theories, such as Pragmatic Equivalent Effect Theory, Cooperative Principle, Polite Principle and Relevance Theory, are more and more widely applied in translation. And they provide translation with a profound theoretical bases to meet the standard of translation. The pragmatic equivalent effect in translation aims at translating meaning in full, taking full amount of differences between the target language and source language in pragmalinguitics and sociopragmatics. Pragma-linguistic equivalent effect realizes the equivalence by comparing TL to SL from the angle of pragmalinguitics, while socio-pragmatic equivalent effect from the angle of sociopragmatics. For examples: 种瓜得瓜，种豆得豆。 译文：As you saw, so will you reap. 吃苦在前，享乐在后。 译文：Be the first to bear hardship and the last to enjoy comforts. 酒醉志昏 译文：When wine is in, wit is out. Pragma-linguistic equivalent effect was used in the translation of these sentences, which were strictly in the form of the sentences of TL and SL. Sometimes, it even requires the parallelism, antithesis, alliteration or rhyme in TL to maintain the original style of the SL in the condition that the informations were maximumly remained. The examples of socio-pragmatic equivalent effect are showed as follows: 4) 济公，劫富济贫，深受人民爱戴。 译文：Jigong, Robin Hood in China, robbed the rich and help the poor. 5) 境内河流湖泊密布，京杭大运河纵贯南北，是著名的江南水乡。 译文：With so many rivers and lakes in it and the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal through it, Suzhou is renowned as “Venice of China”. 6)小心碰头 译文: Mind your head./ Watch your head. Actually, socio-pragmatic equivalence demands the translators to over come the culture difference, to put themselves in the shoes of the audiences of the TL.
