Department of Linguistics Modern Languages Term 2, 2009-10 Chinese University of Hong Kong Thomas Hun-tak Lee LIN5117 Topics in Chinese Language Acquisition Lectures: Tue. 10:30 – 12:15 (NAH115) Tutorials: Tue. 12:30 – 13:15 (NAH114/115) TA: Margaret Lei huntaklee@cuhk.edu.hk margaret@cuhk.edu.hk Course objectives: The course aims to introduce students to basic concepts in language acquisition, and major research findings on selected aspects of the first language acquisition of Chinese, with some reference to the L2 acquisition of Chinese. It is hoped that students will develop an appreciation of the rich linguistic knowledge possessed by children, and the complex factors affecting language development. Students will become aware of some of the major methods used in empirical research on language development, and be able to research on the acquisition of Chinese as a first or second language using an empirical method.
