Since the latter half of the 1990s, ontology has been the main area of study in the semantic web.
Ontology has been actively studied in several areas for a long time. There are many ontological
applications and construction methods. In the study of the semantic web, ontologies are built
using OWL capabilities. However, it is not suitable for managing spatial relationships. To rep-
resent spatial relationships, we try to create new vocabularies based on these two theories. Mod-
eling topological relationships are accomplished using a neighborhood graph that only considers
topological relatedness. In addition, we define the new vocabulary to represent the spatial rela-
tionships based on spatial description logic. In this article, we focus on multimedia information
retrieval. We use the new vocabularies that were defined using these two theories for represent-
ing spatial relationships in image and video retrieval. ? 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
1. INTRODUCTION
Ontology is the focus of a great deal of attention in the study of the semantic
web. Many studies on ontology focused on the methods of building ontologies and
the various languages for expressing web ontologies. In the study of ontology,
careful consideration should be paid to the accurate classification of a specific
thing and the adequate way of representing the relationships that occur between
the respective concepts when the domain ontology is built. As the relationships of
each concept are expressed, various relationships will occur. Recently, there was
