It cannot change the shape or condition of the edge, if the guide plate did not keep the blade away from the soil, the lawn would gradually shrink in size! Poor, crumbly edges should be re-made with a half-moon iron or a sharp blade. Thereafter the sliding action of the guide plate will keep the face of the lawn edge compacted so repeated work with the edging iron should not be necessary.
