Developing Confidence in Students to tackle the Unfamiliar
in Mathematics
Every year Mathematics teachers are confronted with the following scenario:
“A senior student comes to you. He/She tells you that they work hard and succeed well
in the familiar (practised) material but are unsuccessful in problem solving (working with the
unfamiliar). They then say, “I never know how to start. What can I do?”
This is a real poser for the teacher because we would hope that we have imparted some of these skills during Years
8 – 11. There are, of course, some ways in which you can help the student on his way. Here are just a few you
might try regularly.
