What is an organizational frame? According to Herbert (1972), an organizational frame is a structure, such as a graph or time line, which sets a purpose for student learning by determining important ideas and vocabulary and directing students’ reading. According to Karahalios, Tonjets, and Towner (1979), frames and matrices provide students with a visual map or network – helping them see the relatedness of vocabulary and major concepts. Organizational frames such as structured overview (Nelson-Herber, 1986) and semantic mapping (Kinnison Pickens) help students increase comprehension of new concepts through the interaction of prior knowledge and new information. 2.
