Love Contrasts in Wuthering Heights Abstract: Wuthering Heights is Emily Bronte’s masterpiece. As a world famous work, it has been researched by many people from many aspects. Some focus on the characteristics of the main actors; some discuss the love between the hero and heroine. Different from those, this paper analyzes the love contrasts between the two generations from there aspects: sensibility and sense, primitive love and civilized love, hate and love, to display the ideal love in the eyes of Emily Bronte. Key words: love contrasts, Wuthering Heights, sensibility and sense I. Introduction Wuthering Heights is a novel wrote by Emily Bronte, which is her masterpiece and shows her special opinions of love and marriage. Wuthering Heights is the place where the story starts. The novel tells the stories of two families: the Earnshaws who reside at Wuthering Heights, at the edge of the moors, and the genteel and refined Lintons who reside at Thrushcross Grange. Mr. Earnshaw has two children Hindley Earnshaw and Catherine Earnshaw, and an adopted son Heathcliff. Edgar Linton and Isabella Linton, the brother and sister are the masters of Thrushcross Grange. They are the old generation. Their offspring are three children: Cathy – Catherine and Edgar’s daughter, Hareton – Hindley’s son, and Linton – Heathcliff and Isabella’s son. This novel creates a different world with different loves: Catherine and Heathcliff’s love, Edgar and Catherine’s love, little Linton and Cathy’s love, and Cathy and Hareton’s love. To find out the deep theme and analyze the ideal love in Emily Bronte’s mind are this paper’s aims. As a world famous work, Wuthering Heights has been analyzed by many people, such as Chen Kun’s Analyze Emily Bronte’s ‘Wuthering Heights’ (陈焜), E. L. Gilbert’s Emily Bronte’s ‘Wuthering Heights’, Liu Wenrong’s The History of British Novel in 19th Century, and so on.
