Salinger’s novel “ The Catcher in the Rye” has shaped the image of a literary classic Holden Caulfield. In fact, Holden Caulfield is the member of the Beat Generation. Although he is a kind-hearted teenager and eager to be loved , he lived in a circumstance without love and warmth. His world is filled with betray. Such a circumstance makes him feel lonely and expelled by school. This paper gives us a brief discussion of the reasons that Holden has such a complicated character by analyzing the socail background, historical background and the age character of Holden. Because of this dual character, he wants to be “ a catcher in the rye” to protect other children from injuring by the adult world.
