Laboratory at Novartis Campus – Fabrikstrasse 10, Basel, Switzerland , 2010 Yoshio Taniguchi, Architect ARCH 576 Design Seminar: Japanese Architecture Group 8: Yuan Liao – Jeff Anderson Background Information Client: Novartis Pharma AG Basel Design Architect: Yoshio Taniguchi, Tokyo Local Architect: Blaser Architekten/Butscher Architekten General Contractor: Ernst Basler + Partners Project Background: Novartis Campus is intended to create a community that is conducive to creative scientific discovery. Taniguchi’s building is intended to further both the behind the scene’s scientific activity of the campus, as well as contribute to the active atmosphere which is desired at the street level. He does this by creating an engaging, multilevel “base” for the building which offers several public amenities. Design Date: 2005 Completion Date: 2010, construction began in 2007 Total Cost: Over 100 million dollars Size: Four levels above ground, one mezzanine level and a partially underground level Construction Material: Steel, silk-screened glass Project Program: Offices Laboratory Space Ground Level Exhibition Lab Visitor Center Retail Space, Campus Market Germany France Switzerland Novartis campus is located at the intersection of the borders of France, Germany and Switzerland along the Rhine River. Taniguchi’s building is seen here as building number 12 Project Context Design Concept Taniguchi’s concept for the building was a simple, floating, white glass box which would allow for public space and permeability at the ground level. One could argue that the opacity of the building reflects the private nature of the laboratory work going on in the building, beyond the public eye. The Overhang below the second level is intended to provide uninhibited flow of pedestrians around the ground level of the building.
